Ulpotha turns 30 this year – congratulations! 🎉

A traditional working village in the heart of Sri Lanka – low mountains on one side, a lotus-ringed lake and emerald paddy fields on the other. At Ulpotha you climb to the temple on the hill to greet the sun, practise yoga by the lake, and rest with ayurveda in between. Guests only come for part of the year; the rest of the time it goes back to being a village.

I photographed Ulpotha on assignment, and it’s still one of the most peaceful places I’ve ever worked. Telling the story of a place like this – the light, the people, the calm – is exactly the kind of work I love.
